Now that the trees and brush have cleared on Aurora Road (Route 43) to allow for the relocation of utilities, Solon can begin the estimated $10 million widening project. The first phase will include widening and reconstructing 1.1 miles of road from just southeast of SOM Center Road (Route 91) to Andre Lane. The project also includes widening and reconstruction of Liberty Road from Spicebush Lane north to the abandoned railroad track within the city limits.
The purpose of the project is to improve, reduce congestion and increase the level of safety by reducing rear-end collisions along the Route 43 corridor, according to city officials.
In addition to the roadwork, the city will construct a 10-foot-wide multiuse path on the south side of Route 43 from just southeast of Route 91 to Liberty Road. The path will allow for safe walking and biking throughout that area, something that Mayor Edward Kraus has advocated throughout his tenure.
The multiuse path will continue south on Liberty Road to Spicebush Lane, allowing for even more accessibility around the city.
Turn lanes will be added on Route 43 at Portz Parkway and southbound Liberty Road at Route 43. A new traffic signal will be added at Portz Parkway. Sidewalks on the north side of Route 43 will be added following the installation of a new water main, changes that are set to improve drainage, signage and pavement markings.
According to the public works department, the proposed work along Route 43 will be constructed one half at a time so as to not restrict access to adjacent businesses or residences. Westbound Route 43 traffic will be detoured, while eastbound traffic will be maintained. Access will be maintained to all adjacent properties for the duration of the project, city officials said.
