Cleveland Guardians mascot Slider will appear at The Weils in Bainbridge from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 15, to celebrate Weils resident Mary Artino, who will be throwing the first pitch at the Guardians game on May 23.
Artino, front desk coordinator at The Weils, is the direct descendant of Cleveland founder Moses Cleaveland.
When she steps onto the mound at Progressive Field to throw out the first pitch, she won’t be going unprepared.
“Don’t throw underhand and keep practicing, my coaches remind me,” she says with a smile and introductions to her coaching team, Weils residents George Wallo and Ron Gottfried.
According to a Menorah Park news release, both men know a thing or two about baseball and pitching.
Mr. Wallo says he stepped up to show her how to get the ball over the plate just for fun, recalling his days as a high school pitcher.
Mr. Gottfried’s age and his dad’s desire to keep him working in the family business halted his career with the club formerly known as Cleveland Indians.
“Back in those days, they used to have open try-outs and anyone could come down. I was 17 and went and they were ready to sign me up,” Ron shared.
Despite the end of that dream, he has a great story to tell and a book about pitching he wrote in anticipation of getting it published.
Now Artino’s coaches are happy that their skills can be used to help her.
“We talk about the game almost every morning and my ‘team’ gives me tips and words of encouragement. Keep limber daily is their advice, and I’m listening,” said Ms. Artino.
Wanting to make everyone proud, including her ancestor, Moses Cleaveland, she is also spending weekends pitching with her sons.
Mary was originally going to throw out the first pitch on Cleaveland’s birthday, July 22, but it did not pan out.
So May 23 it is for this sixth great-granddaughter of the Cleaveland family’s seventh generation to make memories at Progressive field.
