Geauga County Commissioners recently authorized the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office to create a deputy position for security purposes at the front desk of the Geauga County office building on Ravenwood Drive in Claridon, which opened this past June.
For the position, commissioners approved a yearly expense not to exceed $150,000 which will fund one deputy and one part-time deputy to work no more than a 50-hour week, Chief Deputy Tom Rowan said.
“Somebody has got to fill in for them on vacation,” Mr. Rowan said. “This covers the cost of everybody involved.”
The position covers the hours of 7 a.m. through 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The county office building houses county departments including the board of county commissioners, auto title office, job and family services, public health, veterans services, archives and records and more.
County departments, including public health and the board of commissioners, hold meetings there.
Commissioner Tim Lennon said he thought it prudent to hire a front-desk deputy.
“With 240 employees here, I feel safer with a resource officer here, and for the public,” Commissioner Jim Dvorak said. “We have a lot of foot traffic since we combined all of the departments.”
Sheriff Scott Hildenbrand said the sheriff’s office has seen interest in, and will fill, the position as soon as it can. His vision for the position includes a calendar for the building’s meetings and events.
The front desk is “going to be the first place where anybody goes to ask” where to find a meeting or other point of interest, Sheriff Hildenbrand said.
As of now, the county maintenance department handles scheduling for conference rooms, which can be accessed on its website.
Clerk Christine Blair said a committee will be established for security of the building, similiar to those that exist for the courthouses. Every other building the sheriff’s office is involved with for security has a safety committee, Mr. Rowan said.
