An unsigned flyer left in residents’ mailboxes criticizing Bainbridge Trustee Jeff Markley was the center of discussion on Monday during a regular trustees meeting.
Mr. Markley is running for re-election during the Nov. 2 general election.
“I read through it and got really angry,” Mr. Markley said. “I don’t like people stuffing things in mailboxes anyway, and then, when it’s factually inaccurate, have the courage to sign it.”
The flyer claims Mr. Markley is undermining zoning regulations and making deals with developers. Fellow township officials said the accusations are untrue.
Rich Ostendorf, a resident of the Pilgrim Village development, brought a copy of the flyer left in mailboxes to the meeting asking about it during the public comment period.
Mr. Markley asked Mr. Ostendorf if he knew the author of the letter.
“I have no idea,” Mr. Ostendorf said. “That’s why I’m here rather than taking hearsay from neighbors and anybody else. If you’ve seen it already, I’m interested in knowing what is true and false.”
Trustee Lorrie Sass Benza and Fiscal Officer Janice Sugarman both expressed their disagreement with the flyer and its contents.
“Nothing is true other than the fact that [Mr. Markley] has been here 16 years,” Mrs. Sugarman said.
Mrs. Sass Benza added that trustees are always transparent with township business.
“There’s a legal requirement for open, transparent government,” Mrs. Sass Benza said. “We go above and beyond and out of our way.”
Mr. Markley said he had not responded to the flyer until he felt compelled to when it was brought up by a resident during the meeting.
“It was unsigned, and we don’t really respond to unsigned letters,” Mr. Markley said.
Trustees said they suspect the anonymous author of the flyer is a former township official.
“In my opinion, sending unsigned flyers that are filled with lies is beyond reprehensible,” Mrs. Sass Benza said.
Mr. Markley is running against Michael Bates and AJ Khoury during the general election. There are only two seats up for grabs. Mrs. Sass Benza is not seeking re-election.
