Orange Village police are investigating the death of a 1-year-old boy apparently struck by a vehicle at his Pike Drive residence on July 30.
Responding officers said they found Tammy Curtis, the mother of Bryce Frederick Curtis-Simmons, who appeared panicked at the scene, and helped her gather several other children, according to the report. Officers said Bryce was driven to University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center in Beachwood by Iayana Newell and his older sister Tyler Curtis-Ward.
Ms. Newell and Ms. Curtis-Ward explained they were in the house while two to three small children were playing outside, police said. When they went out to check on the children, they observed Ms. Newell’s vehicle, a 2010 Chevy Malibu, in the grass off of the driveway with Ms. Curtis-Ward's 2-year-old son inside of the car. Bryce was found in the middle of the driveway with an apparent head injury and the two immediately rushed him to the hospital, according to the report.
Officers found no signs of impact on the car, and Ms. Newell said she thought the car “must have slipped out of gear” and stated the keys were in her pocket, not in the car when the accident apparently occurred. According to the report, officers examined the vehicle and found its gear shifter went into reverse, neutral and drive without keys in the ignition or pressure applied to the brakes.
Bryce was pronounced dead at the hospital. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the death as an accident, with blunt force injuries of the head with skull and brain injuries determined as the cause of death. Orange police officers said their investigation of the incident is ongoing.
