At 7 p.m. Friday, May 26, four young playwrights will see their work performed live upon the stage at the Solon Center for the Arts SCA Theater.
The playwrights, teens in eighth grade and up, will see their plays acted out by young actors in grades 2 through 8, professionally staged before an audience of family and friends.
The SCA’s 15th annual “One-Act Play Festival” features four one-act plays created by winners of the SCA playwright competition.
The plays include “The Adventures of Johnson Bruongo,” by Calayla Holmes; “A Day in the Life,” by Adwita Gandhi; “Ragdolls,” by the brother-and-sister team of Jalon and Jacora Goode; and “Falling to Greatness,” by Lilah Anders.
“Falling to Greatness” incidentally includes two of Lilah’s siblings as actors in her play.
According to Katherine Tekesky, SCA’s theater department coordinator, the plays are a culmination of the students’ hard work. She said she is always impressed by their creativity and the way they use things from their daily lives to tell their stories.
“When we get to the performance, the playwrights are so excited to see their plays on the stage,” she said. “The actors also enjoy a chance to perform the work of a fellow student.”
She said when playwright Calayla Holmes came to see the students who were practicing her play, she took the time to give them some notes.
All playwrights are featured in a video prior to each play’s performance. They introduce themselves and share background on how and why they wrote their plays.
As for the actors busy at dress rehearsal this week, they were impressive with their command of their lines, and ability to express emotion through their body language.
The SCA staff works with the playwrights to finalize lines and to cast the actors for each play.
The actors in “The Adventures of Johnson Bruongo” who were practicing Monday at the SCA theater, used pantomime to act out excitedly playing an NBA video game on stage.
They took suggestions from director Krsnaa Fitch, a member of the SCA staff. Other directors are Michelle Wilsonand Matthew Wilks.
The rest of the week, the SCA staff held dress rehearsals for the other three plays.
“It is really quite a week,” said Ms. Tekesky. “It is a lot of work to get four plays on the stage.”
But the audience attending the one-time-only show Friday night will see the creativity of a group of young theater students and playwrights on their way to becoming the next generation of theater professionals. They include:
