Newbury Local Schools plans to join the West Geauga Local School District via territory transfer beginning in the 2020-2021 school year, Newbury officials announced Tuesday.

In a statement, Newbury's Board of Education and administration said after months of negotiations with West Geauga and the Berkshire Local School District, it decided a territory transfer with West G was in its best interests as enrollment continues to decline.

“We are recommending West Geauga for a number of factors, but the most important consideration was the breadth and quality of student programs from AP and college prep classes, to clubs and sports that enhance character and build life-long skills,” the statement said.

West Geauga passed a resolution stating its intent to continue with the territory transfer last month, and the two districts’ administrative teams will continue the process in the coming months, the statement said.

“We understand that this is indeed a bittersweet moment for our staff, parents and families and will continue to communicate transition plans as they are made,” the statement said. “We are all dedicated to making this process as smooth as possible for our students and our staff.”
