A new larger scoreboard is coming to Chardon Memorial Field just in time for the beginning of high school football season.

The Chardon Board of Education members on Monday agreed to purchase the new scoreboard that would replace the aging 22-year-old board.

“The new board provides additional technology-based features that simply were not available 20-plus years ago,” Superintendent Michael P. Hanlon said. “The entire system will be more effective and reduce operating and maintenance costs overall.”

For the scoreboard acquisition, the Chardon Local School District utilized the services of a group purchasing organization consortium known as Omnia Partners, which assists in seeking competitive bids from vendors and then makes those available to participating school districts. Members can take advantage of competitive bidding prices already provided to the group and it streamlines the procurement process, school officials explained. The school district utilized the services from a similar group known as KPN Consortium for the purchase of the field turf at the stadium.

The cost of the scoreboard is expected to be just under $120,000 with revenue coming from previous advertisements as well as the raffle this fall of a vehicle from Junction Auto expected to generate $80,000 for the scoreboard purchase. The remainder of funding will come through the district’s Permanent Improvement Fund.

“We have known that scoreboard replacement would be an issue for a number of years,” Dr. Hanlon said. “We have maintained the current board, but due to its age, replacement parts are simply no longer available.”

The project is expected to be completed by Aug. 1.

In other business, board members approved a primary service agreement between the Educational Service Center of Northeast Ohio and Chardon Local Schools for the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 academic years.

Board members also approved a college credit plus partnership memorandum of understanding between Cuyahoga Community College District and Chardon Local Schools for 2021-2022 school year.

The March 15 meeting was held via Zoom. The next regular Chardon Board of Education meeting is scheduled for April 19 at 6:30 p.m.
