Farewell to Burton Elementary

Burton Elementary School alumni, former teachers and community members will have the opportunity to celebrate memories at an upcoming Alumni and Community Open House event from 5-6:30 p.m. on Oct. 8. Refreshments will be provided. Parking will be available in the back lot of the school or at Century Village. Attendees are encouraged to take photos and bring a favorite memory, which will be digitized and archived to share with future generations. After saying a final goodbye to the Burton Elementary School building, attendees are welcomed to support the Badgers as they play their final home football game at 7 p.m.

A future farewell event for current Burton Elementary students and families is being planned.

Preston lends support

Berkshire Local School District received a $200,000 sponsorship from the Chevy Network and Preston Chevrolet to improve athletic facilities over the next 10 years. Jackie Preston Franck presented a check to Superintendent John Stoddard and Athletic Director Brian Hiscox during a tour of the new district all-grade building on Sept. 21 in Burton. The sponsorship will fund a new gymnasium floor and new turf at the outdoor stadium.

Over the years the Preston family and its corporate entities, including Preston Chevrolet and Preston Superstore, have been generous in supporting the school district.

Badger café open

Berkshire’s Badger Lab Café is now serving customers. Student workers have been selling coffee and hot chocolate to the staff and student body, developing valuable skills required for the service industry and operating a business. Students take orders, budget, market and engage in other retail-type activities. Special thanks to Janice Shimpan, Shelly Pokorny and Lori Klem who have aided the students.

Award for treasurer

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada awarded the Certificate of Achievement to the Berkshire district for excellence. This award is given to treasurers who demonstrate excellence in financial reporting and for producing a comprehensive annual financial report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2020.

Congratulations to District Treasurer Beth McCaffrey and her team.
