Students explore renewable energy

Jordak Elementary School third-graders continue their studies on natural resources after they learned how some resources are non-renewable. Now they’re focusing on how renewable energy can be used, like using wind to power a small car.

In groups, students designed either a sail or pinwheel to propel their cars. Considering the three R’s, they reused newspaper, tissue paper, bubble wrap or paper to make their sail or pinwheel. Students placed their completed car in front of a fan, teacher Barb Tropf turned the fan on a low setting and then the students measured the distance their cars traveled.
