The Gilmour Academy girls cross-country team might not have had an all-Ohioan this season, but that didn’t stop the Lady Lancers from securing their 10th straight top-10 finish during the Division III state championship Saturday at the National Trail Raceway in Hebron.
With just one senior on their state squad, the Gilmour girls scored 259 points from their front five runners to finish ninth in the 20-team field, coming just one point shy of seventh-place McDonald as the top two teams from Northeast Ohio.
Gilmour was led by freshman Kaitlin Rulison, who clocked a 20:14.1 to finished 55th overall overall among 180 runners in the field and 29th in the team race.
Also scoring for the Lady Lancers, sophomore Mary Lombardo finished 44th in the team race in 20:39.6, senior Jorja Hlifka took 49th in 20:50.2, junior Caitrina Barton was 59th in 21:09.0, and sophomore Mia Polisena finished 78th in 21:35.7, while sophomores Ava Moe, 23:29.5, and Nina Padanilam, 24:18.5, rounded out the state squad.
In particular, Lombardo shed 60.1 seconds off her performance from 2018, while Hlifka shed 2:07.5 off her performance from a year ago and Polisena shed 1:20.7 off her race from last year’s state meet.
In the Division III boys competition, meanwhile, Gilmour senior Bryson Simpson finished 58th in 17:11.6 among 181 runners, shedding 60.4 seconds off his finish from a year ago.
