bborange1 — Moreland Hills Elementary School fifth-graders, both in person and virtual, are studying the solar system. As part of the unit, students created planet projects. Students Mason Bourisseau, pictured, and classmate Asher Starrfield, not pictured, found a “sweet” way to strengthen their knowledge of the solar system by creating an edible version out of cake pops, including the sun, the eight planets and a moon.

Junior earns scholastic honors

Orange High School junior Maddie Millett earned an Honorable Mention award in the Writing category earlier this month in the 2020-2021 Scholastic Art & Writing Competition. She was recognized for “The Thanksgiving Throwback” in the Personal Essay and Memoir category. Her teacher at OHS is Ryan Kerns.

OHS students received a total of 25 awards in this year’s competition. Each year the Cleveland Institute of Art hosts the Scholastic Art & Writing Competition that recognizes creative achievement in area seventh- through 12th-grade students. The young artists and writers compete for cash prizes, medals and scholarship awards. A panel of local professional artists, art educators, writers and writing educators jury the exhibit and select the awarded pieces from nearly 3,000 entries. Students who receive Gold Key Awards for individual works and portfolios continue to the national competition held each spring in New York City.

Student designs yearbook cover

Eighth-grader Inaya Chowdhary is the winner of the 2020-2021 yearbook front cover design for Brady Middle School. This year’s runner-up design by sixth-grader Cydney Feinberg will be featured on the back cover of the yearbook.

Online book fair a success

The Orange Elementary PTA announced that this year’s online Scholastic Book Fair was a success, thanking families who supported the event and for raising more than $1,100 in Scholastic Dollars for the schools.
