National Merit student awards

Principal Jay Bishop of West Geauga High School announced on Sept. 25 that senior Emily Allegretti has been named a commended student and Steven Hensley a semifinalist in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Commended students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2019 competition by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Steven is one of approximately 16,000 high school seniors who are semifinalists. Steven is ranked in the top 1 percent of all test takers in the U.S.

Students take virtual trips

West Geauga High School students used virtual reality goggles, which were purchased through a grant from the West Geauga Education Foundation, this week to take virtual field trips. The virtual reality goggles immersed the students in a variety of 3-D experiences, helping them take a virtual field trip to a location right from the classroom. Students had opportunities to visit places like the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Sistine Chapel and the Eiffel Tower. The virtual format opens the door to a wide variety of individual experiences that would be difficult to do in a conventional school setting.
