Fall fish sale starts
The Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District is taking orders for fingerling-size largemouth bass, redear sunfish, yellow perch, bluegill/sunfish mix, channel catfish, white amurs and fathead minnows. Pick up day is Sept. 17 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on the midway at the Geauga County Fairgrounds in Burton.
Learn about creating a sustainable employee recognition program to show employee appreciation at the Chagrin Valley Chamber of Commerce’s virtual Lunch and Learn on Zoom Aug. 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Heidi Baumgart of Arborwear will host a webinar to help companies consider positive ways to honor their employees. Cost is $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers to attend. All participants will receive a $10 gift card to Welshfield Inn after attending the meeting. Be Camper of the Week
Geauga Park District’s Camper of the Week contest awards one lucky camper or camper family each week with a $50 gift card courtesy of Geauga Cares4U. Entries are accepted weekly through Tuesday, concluding with the week of Sept. 2. Learn about camping in the four Geauga Park District parks and make reservations at www.geaugaparkdistrict.org, activities, camping. Campsites must be reserved online at least seven days prior to the reservation or by phone before 4 p.m. the day of the reservation, as walk-up camping is no longer permitted.
To enter the contest, participants must send a picture posing with their campsite to email@example.com with name, age, hometown, date, campsite location in the email body and “Camper of the Week Contest” in the subject line. Geauga Walkers meet
Active seniors are welcome to hike over 1 mile on a naturalist-led walk from 1-2:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Affelder House in West Woods, 15139 Chillicothe Road (Route 306) in Russell. Senior trash pickup
The Geauga County Department on Aging rescheduled trash pick-up for registered Burton residents, age 60 and older, for Aug. 14. Registration and pickup intake must be completed by Aug. 7 or earlier.
Acceptable items include appliances, refrigerators and freezers with the doors removed, small items must be bundled and not loose, upholstered furniture and mattresses must be wrapped in plastic and taped securely, no paint, hazardous chemicals, yard waste, recyclable items or garbage waste, etc. Limit of 10 items per home.
The township road crew cannot enter homes. All refuse items must be outside by garages, out buildings or in the driveway by the evening of Aug. 13. Do not leave items curbside. For more allowable trash guidelines or to register for the pickup, call 440-279-2130 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Elderberries at Chickagami
Active seniors can join the Geauga County Department on Aging, University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center and Geauga Park District from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 20 to reconnect with childhood summers at Camp Chickagami in Chickagami Park, 17957 Tavern Road in Parkman. Tune Traders at West Woods
Play, sing or listen with the Maple Town Tune Traders from 7-10 p.m. Aug. 27 at West Woods Nature Center. Musicians of all levels, genres and instruments are welcome. Challenge the trails
Sign up to challenge yourself and your horse on a 1-2 hour challenge course with natural trail obstacles and nature questions along the trails from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 29 at West Woods, 9465 Kinsman Road (Route 87) in Russell. Awards and certificates will be given in youth and adult divisions. Helmets are recommended. Trailer horses to the West Woods shelter parking lot. Participants will be assigned departure times in order of registration. Ride out individually or in pairs at a leisurely pace. Course can be completed in 1-2 hours; once finished, ride other trails on your own. Expect hills, gravel, mud, streams, bicycles, hikers and other challenges. Bring a shovel to clean up after your horse in the parking lot. Registration is required at 440-279-0880.
