Meet author Kiran Bhat

Come to the Chagrin Falls Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library, 100 E. Orange St., on Jan. 21 from 5-6:30 p.m. to meet author Kiran Bhat, global citizen, as he talks about his first book “We of the Forsaken World.” Mr. Bhat spent 10 years working on this book while traveling to 132 countries and learning 12 languages. Chagrin Falls Contra Dance

The Chagrin Falls Contra Dance is Jan. 21 at the Chagrin Falls Town Hall, 83 N. Main St. Enjoy lively dance and folk music performed by Paul Kovac, Caroline King and Will Craig. Lessons will precede the dance at 7:30 p.m. Dancing is from 8-10 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults, $8 for youths and $25 for families. KSU professor dishes Motown

Join the first-ever Dinner & Dish hosted at the Tanglewood Club, 8745 Tanglewood Trail in Bainbridge, on Jan. 23. Special guest Eugene Shelton will dish all about his public relation years at Motown, CBS Records, Columbia and Epic Records. 

Mr. Shelton is a professor at Kent State University in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Listen to his stories about guiding Lionel Richie to his solo career, attending Rick James’ “Out of Jail” celebration, writing the liner notes for Diana Ross’s album and more.

Cost for this event is $25 for members and $35 for non-members. Both include dinner and conversation. A cash bar will be available. This event runs from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

How to stay sane in 2020

Come to the Democratic Headquarters, 12420 Kinsman Road in Newbury, on Jan. 23 for a Hot Topic discussion on surviving the upcoming 2020 election season. Dennis Schmidt, retired Cleveland Clinic psychiatrist, will talk about ways to maintain your sanity during the year. Dinner and dessert will be served. Cost is $25 for non-members and $13 for members. Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m.

‘Souper’ Bowl 2020

Ditch the forks and grab your spoons. Come try homemade soups and cast your vote for the best at the Orange Senior Center, 32205 Chagrin Blvd. in Pepper Pike, Jan. 30 from noon to 1:30 p.m. This event will take place in the Blue Room with participating vendors who are competing for the bragging rights of “Souper Bowl Champion.” Cost is $12 for members and $17 for nonmembers. American Red Cross bloodmobile

American Red Cross bloodmobile will be taking blood donations from 1-7 p.m. Jan. 27 at Geauga West Library, 13455 Chillicothe Road in Chester, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Chardon Branch of the Geauga County Public Library, 110 E. Park St. in Chardon. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. There is a critical need for all blood types, especially type O blood. Free hearing screenings

Hearing screenings are recommended annually just like for blood pressure and cholesterol. Orange Senior Center, 32205 Chagrin Blvd. in Pepper Pike, will have a free hearing screening on Jan. 30 at 9 a.m. The center also offers free hearing screenings on Mondays from 9-11 a.m. Call the center at 216-831-8600, ext. 5700 to schedule a hearing screening.

Health services at Orange center

The Orange Senior Center, 32205 Chagrin Blvd. in Pepper Pike, offers a variety of health services. Individuals can call the center to schedule an appointment with a podiatrist, acupressure, reiki and massage therapists. Time slots are available every month; fees vary. Free blood pressure checks are also offered Wednesdays from 9:30-11:30 a.m. For more information, call the OSC at 216-831-8600, ext. 5700.

Sign up for Medicare counseling

Open enrollment for Medicare is just around the corner. Come to the Orange Senior Center, 32205 Chagrin Blvd. in Pepper Pike, on Feb. 11 at 9:30 a.m. to learn more about what options are available with the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP). These free, 45-minute counseling sessions require pre-registration for specific times. For more information, call the OSC at 216-831-8600, ext. 5700.
