Hawken School junior Michael Butler was the lone event winner for his team, clocking 4:51.22 in the 500-yard freestyle, but the Hawks had enough depth to reclaim the Division II sectional crown on Friday at the Spire Institute in Geneva.

The Hawken School boys swim team didn’t win any relays and only claimed gold in one individual event during the Division II sectional meet on Friday at the Spire Institute in Geneva.

Meanwhile, defending state champion and archrival University School was busy cleaning up with a trio of double-event champs and recording a pair of triumphant quartets. Surely, that’d be enough for the Prepper torpedoes to defend their sectional title.

It wasn’t.

With the top 16 finishers scoring in each event, the Hawken boys had enough depth to tally 430 points and reclaim their sectional crown, besting runner-up University, 405 points, and third-place Chagrin Falls, 261 points, in the 28-team field. While US won the title last year, Hawken was the sectional champ in 2017 and 2018.

Hawken’s lone winner, junior Michael Butler clocked a 4:51.22 in the 500-yard freestyle to best sophomore teammate Will Dietz’s runner-up finish in 4:54.23.

That duo also scored monster points in the 200 freestyle. Although University senior Frank Applebaum won the event in 1:46.98, Hawken’s Dietz was runner-up in 1:47.51 and Butler was third in 1:49.59.

University’s Applebaum also won the 100 butterfly in a cruising 53.02 seconds, while Chagrin Falls senior John Cashy was runner-up in 53.93 seconds.

In addition to Applebaum, University seniors Colin Savage and Nicolas Tekieli claimed a pair of individual events apiece.

Savage won the 50 freestyle in 21.22 seconds, besting Chagrin senior Clark Reboul, 22.13 seconds, and Gilmour Academy senior Matt Vanone, 22.49 seconds.

And Savage won the 100 freestyle in 48.79 seconds, besting Hubbard sophomore Dominic Panozzo’s runner-up finish in 49.29 seconds.

Tekieli won the 200 individual medley in 1:57.69, edging Hawken junior Alex Podrez by 0.03 second, while Hawken junior Connor Brown took third in 2:01.11.

And Tekieli won the 100 backstroke in 51.69 seconds, easily besting Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin freshman Jonathan Ratka’s runner-up finish in 55.56 seconds and Hawken sophomore Jacob Esposito’s third-place showing in 56.06 seconds.

University owned a 10-point lead on Hawken after the 100 backstroke, with two events to go. And the Preppers were a shoo-in to win the meet finale 400 freestyle relay.

But Hawken took command in the 100 breaststroke with a two-four-five-six finish from Podrez, 1:01.07, senior Hunter Forsythe, 1:02.75, junior Donovan Liao, 1:02.78, and senior Philip Pioro, 1:05.08, outscoring University, 59-18, in that event to turn a 10-point deficit into a 31-point lead.

Howland junior Jared Mindek won the 100 breaststroke in 58.24 seconds, while Chagrin Falls junior Michael Tropf was third in 1:02.17.

University’s 400 freestyle relay of Tekieli, 47.96 seconds, senior Jack O’Brien, 50.43, senior Carter Faulkner, 49.98, and Applebaum, 50.65, clocked a triumphant 3:19.02, but it was only enough to make up six points in that 31-point deficit. Hawken’s 400 relay was runner-up in 3:21.82.

The Preppers also won the 200 medley relay with backstroker Tekieli, 24.17 seconds, breaststroker Savage, 29.57, butterflier Applebaum, 24.33, and senior freestyler Prajwal Guruprasad, 22.65, clocking a 1:40.72. Chagrin Falls was runner-up in 1:41.26.

And in the 200 freestyle relay, Chagrin Falls’ quartet of Cashy, 22.06 seconds, Tropf, 22.24, senior Parker Broz, 22.59, and Reboul, 22.18, claimed gold in 1:29.07, besting runner-up University by 0.52 second.
