Police blotters from Solon to Chagrin Falls to Bainbridge to Chardon are filled with reports of stolen or defaced political signs.
On one Geauga street, signs supporting Republican President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden were reported missing. Thieves have been bold swiping the signs in broad daylight and the dark of night. Some residents have reported seeing someone run onto their lawn, grab the sign and then hightail it back to a waiting car.
Some signs have been painted over, like one sign in Bainbridge where a perpetrator painted a hammer and sickle on the face of Biden. Other reports have someone spray painting a big “X” on Trump’s image.
We have a question for those thieves: What exactly do you do with all the signs? Is there a designated dumping ground for political signs you don’t like? Do you have a basement cave where you proudly display all the stolen signs?
Signs are a form of free speech, something we all treasure. You may not support the same candidate or the same issue but let the sign be.
It might be better to engage in a conversation about each candidate and issue.
Those yard posters are a true sign that Election Day – Nov 3 – is nearing.
