Everybody deserves to have their day in court and we’re relieved to see that the recent federal charges have been dropped against Geauga County Auditor Charles Walder.

While we understand the concerns raised by the two plaintiffs in the case, U.S. District Judge James Gwin made a solid and well-founded case for throwing out the charges.

Unfortunately, Geauga County taxpayers are on the hook for the cost of defending Mr. Walder and when cases like this are dismissed without prejudice, there are no real winners.

We anxiously wait to see how the state charges against Mr. Walder pan out, but we have a hunch they will also ultimately be dismissed.

There’s no question that conflict exists in Geauga County. As we near the end of a contentious 2021, here’s hoping calmer heads will prevail in the coming year.
